Scuba Diving Indonesia

Dive some of the world's richest marine environments aboard Scubaspa Zen, with expert guides, a dedicated dive dhoni and routes spanning the Indonesian archipelago.

Explore the Heart of the Coral Triangle

Home to some of the richest marine biodiversity on Earth, Indonesia’s vast archipelago offers remarkably different diving environments, shaped by geography, currents, and marine ecosystems.

Our routes combine established dive sites with more remote locations, with careful consideration given to the balance of each cruise. The aim is not simply to visit the most famous sites, but to create a varied diving program that makes the most of each region while keeping the days aboard the dhoni interesting and well-paced.

  • Small groups, expert guides

Dive groups of no more than four divers per guide are led by bilingual PADI professionals who know these waters season after season.

  • Diving across Indonesia

With over 12 routes across seven major diving regions, Zen explores some of Indonesia’s most remarkable underwater destinations.

When to Visit Indonesia for Diving

There is no single best time for a liveaboard holiday in Indonesia, as each region has its own season. Raja Ampat is at its best from October to May, with calmer seas and nutrient-rich currents, while Halmahera is sailed in March, Triton Bay in February–March and September–October, and the sheltered waters of Cenderawasih Bay in July and August.

From May to October, Zen’s routes turn toward Komodo, Alor and the Banda Sea, following the more favorable seasonal conditions across these regions. September and October also bring opportunities for hammerhead shark encounters in the Banda Sea.

As Zen moves between regions, these transition periods also allow us to offer longer itineraries connecting them. Choose your destination first, and the season will follow.

Types of Diving in Indonesia

Few destinations offer the variety of diving found across Indonesia. From manta ray cleaning stations and current-swept pinnacles to dramatic walls, channels, and drift dives, the underwater topography changes considerably from one region to another. Some areas are known for their exciting currents, while sheltered reefs and muck diving sites reveal an entirely different world of small, unusual marine life.

Night dives bring the reefs to life after dark, while encounters with whale sharks around traditional fishing platforms, known as bagans, offer opportunities for both diving and snorkeling in certain regions. Historic World War II wrecks add another dimension to the diving. Whether searching for tiny critters, drifting alongside schooling fish, or watching manta rays gather at cleaning stations, each type of diving reveals something different about Indonesia’s underwater world.

Dive Dhoni

The Dive Dhoni: Designed Around Divers

Inspired by the traditional boats of the Maldives, Scubaspa Zen’s dedicated 21-meter dive dhoni keeps diving operations separate from the main vessel. Spacious and fully equipped, it offers comfortable seating, gear storage, easy water access and a sundeck. With tanks, compressors and equipment kept aboard the dhoni, Zen remains a peaceful place to relax between dives.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before your first dive

What are the minimum dive requirements?

Scubaspa Zen itineraries require an Advanced Open Water certification, or equivalent, and a minimum of 30 logged dives. Divers with fewer than 30 logged dives can still join with a private guide, subject to availability. For guests with fewer than 50 logged dives, a private guide is strongly recommended due to the currents and varied diving conditions found across Indonesia.

What is the dive group ratio?

Our dive guides organize groups according to each diver’s level and experience. The first dive of the trip serves as a check dive, after which every guest joins the group that best suits their abilities. Each group has a maximum of four divers per guide.

What should I know about diving safety in Indonesia?

Currents are part of what makes diving in Indonesia so rich, so a dive computer, surface marker buoy (SMB) and reef hook are required on every dive. Solo and decompression diving are not permitted, and dive insurance covering medical evacuation is mandatory for all divers. Oxygen and first aid equipment are carried on board, our dive team is trained in emergency response, and hyperbaric chambers are available in several of Indonesia’s main diving hubs.

Is it possible to book a private guide?

Private guides can be arranged on request and must be booked and paid for in advance. Last-minute requests are subject to availability and must be confirmed with our Operations Manager.
