Best of the Maldives
Diving in the Maldives is known for its remarkable marine life, from vibrant reefs to large pelagics. Encounter manta rays, whale sharks, reef sharks, turtles, eagle rays and schooling fish, alongside fascinating macro life.
When to Visit the Maldives for Diving
Diving in the Maldives runs year-round, shaped by two monsoons. From November to May, the Northeast Monsoon brings dry weather and excellent visibility, with channel dives on the eastern sides of the atolls and manta rays gathering at cleaning stations on the western sides.
From June to October, the Southwest Monsoon brings quieter months and stronger currents, ideal for drift diving. The pattern reverses, with mantas on the eastern sides and channel dives on the west. Our dive schedules follow the monsoons and tides, so every season offers its own encounters.
Types of Diving in the Maldives
Diving in the Maldives is shaped by its coral atolls, ocean currents, and incredible marine life. From manta ray cleaning stations and colorful pinnacles, known locally as thilas, to reef walls, overhangs, and channels between islands, each dive site offers a different perspective. Channel dives are particularly known for encounters with reef sharks, eagle rays, and larger fish such as Napoleon wrasses, while sheltered reefs reveal turtles, moray eels, and a rich variety of smaller marine life.
Night diving is another highlight, especially the bonfire night dive, where underwater lights attract plankton and, with a little luck, feeding manta rays. Some itineraries also offer the chance to snorkel with whale sharks or other visiting marine life near Yin and Yang after dark. Wreck dives, nurse shark encounters and other pelagic sightings add to the variety, with experiences changing from one atoll to another.
The Dive Dhoni: Designed for Divers
In the Maldives, the Dhoni is more than just a support boat; it is a trusted companion for every dive. Our custom-built dhoni is spacious and well equipped, with ample room for divers to gear up, store equipment, and safely enter and exit the water. Facilities include generous seating, multiple entry points, a stern platform, a sundeck, and onboard bathroom facilities.
This thoughtful separation allows you to step from the comfort of your living space directly into the adventure of the ocean. Whether you are heading to a remote atoll or a vibrant coral garden, the dhoni ensures that every excursion is effortless and every dive is perfectly prepared.

Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know before your first dive
What are some practical information and safety should I be aware of?
The Maldives imposes a recreational depth limit of 30 meters. Diving with a computer is mandatory, and it is prohibited to dive alone or conduct decompression dives. Night dives and dives deeper than 18 meters (60 feet) are available only to divers with advanced diver certification. You may upgrade your certification level with one of our PADI instructors at any time during your stay on board Scubaspa Maldives liveaboards.
What are the minimum dive requirements?
Requirements depend on the itinerary:
- Best of the Maldives, Far North, Love Weeks and Solo Travelers Cruise: guests booking the Scuba Package need an Open Water Diver certification.
- Best of the Maldives, Far North and Love Weeks: guests with a Scuba Diver certification are welcome to join, but must dive with a pressure gauge.
- Best of the Maldives, Far North and Love Weeks: the PADI Open Water Diver course can be completed on board, on 7-night trips only.
- Deep South Expedition: Advanced Open Water certification, or equivalent, and a minimum of 100 logged dives are required.
What is the dive group ratio?
Our dive masters divide the divers into groups according to their level and competence. During the first diving, all divers are closely verified, and then each diver is assigned to his/her group according to the abilities. There are maximum 6 divers per guide.
Is it possible to book a private guide?
Private guides must be booked and paid in advance. Last-minute requests must be confirmed with the Operations Manager to check availability.
