A Land of Dragons and Reefs
Komodo National Park spans the islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Padar, where the Flores Sea meets the Indian Ocean. Scubaspa Zen sails both sides of the park, pairing the warm, current-swept pinnacles of the north with the cooler, nutrient-rich reefs of the south. Ashore, ranger-led walks bring guests close to Komodo dragons, while a sunrise or sunset hike reveals one of Indonesia’s most famous viewpoints.

Diving Details
Diving in Komodo is shaped by the strong tidal currents flowing between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean, supporting some of Indonesia’s healthiest reefs. From current-swept pinnacles and coral-covered walls to cooler southern reefs, divers may have the chance to encounter manta rays, reef sharks, giant trevallies, turtles, and dense schools of fish. Our guides select dive sites daily according to tides, currents, and local conditions.
In the north, dive sites may include Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, known for sharks and schooling fish, and Batu Bolong, a small rock covered in hard and soft corals. Further south, Manta Alley is famous for manta encounters, while Cannibal Rock off Rinca is known for its cooler, nutrient-rich waters, colorful sea apples, frogfish, and other fascinating critters.
Practical Information for diving in Komodo National Park
- Water temperature: 27–29°C (81–84°F) in the north, dropping to 22–25°C (72–77°F) at some southern sites.
- Dive experience: Minimum Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent) and 30 logged dives. Best suited to intermediate and advanced divers with good buoyancy control.
- Currents: Komodo is known for strong currents, particularly around northern pinnacles and channels. Conditions can change quickly, and our guides plan dives carefully around the tides.
- Wetsuit recommendation: 5 mm full wetsuit, with a hood or vest for cooler southern sites (three dives a day, with an occasional fourth, can leave you chilled).

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know before setting sail
Is it safe to see Komodo dragons?
Yes. Dragon walks on Komodo or Rinca are always led by national park rangers, who keep groups at a safe distance and share insight into the dragons’ behavior. Wear closed shoes, stay with your ranger and follow their instructions at all times.
Which airports do I fly into?
Labuan Bajo is served by Komodo Airport, with direct domestic flights from Bali and Jakarta. For the Bali route, you fly into or out of Bali’s international airport. Our reservations team can advise on the best connections for your trip.
How strong are the currents in Komodo?
Komodo is known for strong currents, which bring the reefs to life but can change quickly. Our guides plan every dive around the tides and choose sites to match conditions, and an Advanced Open Water certification (or equivalent) with at least 30 logged dives is required.
